Carbon-14 dating could be used to estimate the age of all of the following except
A. fossils
b. ancient scrolls
c. petrified wood
d. artifacts from the titanic ship

Respuesta :

I would think artifacts from the titanic ship because carbon-14 is an isotope of carbon found in organic material. inorganic material therefore does not posses carbon- 14 and since all the other items are organic, only the artifacts could not be directly dated.

When dating inorganic material, organic material in the same surrounding sediment layer is usually used. In the case of the Titanic, there is no sediment layer. There is also the possibility that the ocean's salt water would skew any attempt at carbin dating but that is just a thought i am not sure about

The age of the artifacts cannot be determined using Carbon-14 dating .

What is Carbon-14 dating ?

Radiocarbon dating is based on the simple principle that all living things absorb carbon from the atmosphere and food sources around them, including a small quantity of naturally radioactive carbon-14.

When a plant or animal dies, it stops absorbing carbon, but the radioactive carbon it has stored decays and so there age can be determined using Carbon-14 dating

In the given question it is asked that

Carbon-14 dating could be used to estimate the age of all of the following except which one from the options :

Fossils , Ancient scrolls {made on leaves } , petrified wood are all organic substances and used to absorb Carbon from the atmosphere , and thus now they decay the C-14 after their life,

while the artifacts from the titanic ship are all made of Inorganic materials and will not have absorbed C and so the age of the artifacts cannot be determined using Carbon-14 dating .
