They were greatly persecuted at the beginning of the 16th century, by Catholics and Magisterial Protestants, mainly as a result of their understatement of the bible which put them in conflict with the church interpretations and also with the government by the time. Anabaptism wasn't settled by any state, thus did not have any major representation.
The majority of Anabaptists honor a literal reading of the "Sermon on the Mount" which prohibited taking oaths, getting involved in military actions, or involvement in government. Some, believed differently and fulfilled with these conditions of society.
