Wells titled "The Cylinder Opens". The author uses the passage above to describe the foolishness of people because they were very interested with the cylinder with no reason.

In the passage from The War of the Worlds, the author deploys humor to show the foolishness of people. In here it is said that the narrator saw Martian cylinders landing on earth. To add to this foolishness, the people of earth saw that the Martians does not move the way humans move and so they laughed. They just did not know that the Martians planned to rid humans for them to occupy.
