The standard look of quadratic equation: [tex]ax^2+bx+c=0[/tex]
Vieta's Formula says that [tex]x_1+x_2=-b[/tex]

So by knowing that [tex]b=5[/tex] we know that the sum of the roots in this equation is -5.
bcalle
2x^2 + 5x - 3 = 0
(x + 3)(2x - 1) = 0
x = -3, x = 1/2
Sum of the roots: -3 + (1/2) = - 2 1/2
