The width of a rectangle is 9 inches less than the length. The perimeter is 74 inches. Find the length and the width.

perimeter = 2L +2W

from the problem we know P = 74 and W=L-9

so 74 = 2L +2W 

74 = 2L+2(L-9)

74 = 2L + 2L -18

74 = 4L-18'

92 = 4L

L=23

W=14
