Many colonies had only one resource developed, which leads to a lot of problem, because if the demand for that resource drops, it would lead to financial difficulties. Most of the time used-to-be-colonies only have one resource developed because the countries that took over them only allowed them to grow that one crop, which led to a drastic decrease of the variety of things they can sell in the global market.
This meant that the countries ability to prosper goes by how much demand other countries need.
