It is important to be familiar with the sport that you are photographing because then you will know where to go to get the best shot.

Say you are taking photographs for basketball, you would want to take lots of photos by the bucket so you can get pictures of people scoring points. An action shot like that is much more interesting than a picture of basketball players on the bench!

It is always best to be familiar with the sport that you are photographing because you will be aware of where and how to capture the best photographs. If you are unfamiliar with the sport, it is much more difficult to capture good images because you are unaware of the best photographing positions. 

Once you have become familiarized with the sport, you will be much more likely to capture great action photographs because you know what you need to aim for.
