I'm not necessarily sure of what your are asking for, yet to solve the equation, all you do is add like terms, things that have the same variable part and then divide by the coefficient.

2y + y = 18
3y = 18
y = 6.
collect the like terms
2y+y=18
divide both sides of the equation by 3
3y=18
y=6
