Genes provide the instructions for building proteins in a cell. The sequence of DNA within a gene is transcribed into mRNA, which, in turn, serves as a template for protein synthesis. Ribosomes then read the mRNA sequence, and with the help of transfer RNA (tRNA), amino acids are assembled into proteins according to the genetic code. This process, known as translation, establishes the connection between genes and the proteins produced by a cell.
