The initial situation happens on a boat in the Caribbean sea. Two friends, Whitney and Rainsford, are on a hunting trip to Amazon. They are nearing an island which is, as Whitney explains, notorious for many ship wrecks which have happened there. They are discussing the meaning of their job. While Whitney has some compassion for his animal victims, Rainsford shows none. The world, according to him, is a place where you either hunt or are hunted down. This initial scene prepares the ground for the drama that is about to follow.
