Hello there!
Our goal is to isolate the variable on one side of the inequality, and then solve for it.
1.) 5x + 3 [tex] \leq [/tex] -17
Subtract 3 from both sides to isolate the variable.
5x [tex] \leq [/tex] -20
Divide 5 from both sides to solve for the variable.
x [tex] \leq [/tex] -4 is your first inequality solution for the first inequality.
2.) 14x + 20 [tex] \leq [/tex] 13
Subtract 20 from both sides to isolate the variable.
14x [tex] \leq [/tex] -7
Divide both sides by 14 to solve for the variable.
x [tex] \leq [/tex] [tex] \frac{1}{2} [/tex] is your solution for the second inequality.
I hope this helps!
