The department of highway safety and motor vehicles is the agency that monitors the sale and registration of vehicles and vessels within the state.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles constitutes a statutorily organized cabinet agency of Florida government. The bureau head of DHSMV is the Executive Director to whom the Governor appoints with the permission of the Cabinet.
The Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Public Safety were merged in 1969 under Governor Claude Kirk, giving way to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
