Carbon is a nonmetal found in group 14 of the periodic table. Carbon is a unique element for the following reasons;

  • It has the ability to form infinitely long chains
  • Carbon can exist in crystalline and non crystalline allotropic forms
  • Carbon is found in every organic compound

The ability of carbon to form long chains of carbon atoms is called catenation. Catenation occurs in sillicon and germanium but only a few atoms of these elements are involved so short chains are formed.

Carbon has diamond and graphite as crystalline allotropes and then coal and coke as non crystalline allotropes.

Organic chemistry is the study of carbon compounds because carbon forms the backbone of all organic compounds.
