Elizabeth Tudor or Elizabeth I, acquired the throne after Mary Tudor’s death.

She adopted a policy of compromise, but gradually enforced reforms that both Protestants and Catholics could accept. Under her rule, English replaced Latin as the language of the Anglican service. The Church of England kept the old hierarchy of bishops and archbishops, but Elizabeth confirmed that the monarch was the head of the Anglican Church.

In the 1500s, she firmly established England as a Protestant nation while keeping many Catholic ideas.
