The references to Annie´s height may suggest that she is not comfortable with her life, she might feel out of place or even, as in the references to her father, being able to see above many things that others probably cannot.

It is a moment when Annie starts realizing that the island is not for her, i.e, she is not comfortable here. The situation deals with Annie's choice between her mother and self-identification in the context of the island where the latter represents her mother's influence to this identity. The second phrase describes how she has become a grown girl, yet still is treated like a child.
