Ever since Spain began their colonization of North America in the 1500's, they did not have a good relationship with different indigenous populations (aka Native Americans). Originally, Spanish conquistadors tried to enslave indigenous citizens and tried to force them to work for them. This included producing cash crops and searching for gold. This system of forced labor and forced conversion to Christianity was part of the encomienda system.

By the time 1680 came around, the indigenous populations were sick of Spanish colonial rule and decided to revolt. This revolt, lead by Pope, was largely successful in temporarily driving out Spanish influence in modern day New Mexico. This gave the indigenous populations more freedom and opportunity to live the lifestyle they wanted.
