Greece  had only a few areas of good soil for farming. The rest was quite stony hills and mountains, and not very many rivers either. If Athens wanted to trade olive oil in Corinth for purple dye, it was much easier to go by sea. Also the sea provided plenty of food for people.Greeks were very adventurous and began exploring the Mediterranean long before the Trojan War They also began sending out colonies at quite an early date, all due to being familiar with the sea.
