You said                      x + 2/5 = 12

It might be easier to handle if we use the decimal for 2/5.

                                               x + 0.4 = 12

Subtract 0.4 from each side:  x = 11.6

That's all there is to it.  I'm sorry I can't make it
more complicated for you.

x + [tex] \frac{2}{5} [/tex] = 12

First, subtract [tex] \frac{2}{5} [/tex] from both sides. / Your problem should look like: x = 12 - [tex] \frac{2}{5} [/tex]
Second, simplify 12 - [tex] \frac{2}{5} [/tex] to [tex] \frac{58}{5} [/tex] / Your problem should look like: x = [tex] \frac{58}{5} [/tex]

Answer as fraction: x = [tex] \frac{58}{5} [/tex]
Answer as decimal: x = 11.6
