Here are the four reasons Jem and Dill give for deciding to peek into the Radley window on this particular night:
1. no one can see them - it was particularly dark that night
2. Atticus wouldn't notice - which means they wouldn't be punished
3. if they get shot by Boo, they will miss school
4. easier to see in the dark house - and nobody will spot them

Above all, they were curious to see who Boo was because they heard rumors that he comes out at night to eat animals.

  • They managed to satisfy their curiosity and if something went wrong, they would use it as an excuse not to go to school.

Jem and Dill are very curious about Radley. For this reason, they wish to watch over him, observe him, so that they will know if he is evil and how it will be possible for them to defend themselves against him. However, despite their curiosity, they are very afraid of Radley, so they decide to spy on him through the window.
