Why are thermometers filled with alcohol instead for water?

Most thermometers are filled with mercury, but some are filled with alcohol. The reason we use alcohol instead of water is that alcohol has a lower freezing point (-114°C) than water (0°C).

Also, alcohol doesn't condensate on the top unlike water, which makes the reading of the thermometer easier to read.

Thermometer is an instrument which is used to measure the temperature of any substance which is present in liquid state.

In most of the thermometers mercury is used as it shows high fluctuations and small change will also measurable. We did not use water in the thermometers as they have normal freezing point as 0 degree celsius, but we will use alcohols in the thermometers as they have low freezing point than water as of -114 degree celsius.

And for this reason we will use thermometers filled with alcohol in all places under cold season also.

Hence due to lower freezing point we will use.
