Wide range of movement
The sternoclavicular joint (a.k.a. sternoclavicular articulation) is the joint between the manubrium of the sternum and the clavicle bone. Although it is structurally classified as a synovial saddle joint, it is functionally classified as a diarthrosis and biaxial joint. It is a very strong joint with a large degree of mobility involved in the elevation, depression, protraction, and retraction of the shoulders, and rotation of the arms.
