The soil is not very flat is it is rocky and if the climate it too cold, plants will not grow.

The thin and rocky soil up North and cold weather was not good for farming like it was in the south such as in South Carolina or Georgia. The New England colonists stuck to lumbering, trading, shipbuilding, fishing, and so on. Down south was where the large scale farming and plantations took place.
