It was an unusually cold day for this time of the year. The city of Vauban is not accustomed to such a drastic change overnight. The people had to pull out their winter clothes quickly.

idk this might help, but i would say to rephraze

It was very cold althought it shouldn't have been. So everyoen had to take out their winter clothing.
