The
Oedipus Complex is associated with the phallic stage of psychosexual
development. In this stage the primary erogenous zone is the genital zone. This
stage is also when children, according to Freud, become aware of the genital differences
between a male and a female. The Oedipus Complex occurs in this stage and
refers to child’s unconscious desire for the opposite-sex parent. According to
Freud, this is necessary and it is resolved by child’s identification with the
same-sex parent.
