Gender equality, also known as gender justice, is the view that all people must receive equal treatment and are not discriminated against based on their natural, gender identity. The psychologist, John Money, mentions that children may have an awareness and attachment to gender ranging from as early as 18 months to two years. Another psychologist, Lawrence Kohlberg, said that gender identity had not been formed until the age of three.
Research shows there is evidence that gender identity has a biological component. Several factors such as genes and hormones — including when someone is still in the womb — can affect gender identity.
The effect of hormones is a complex factor. Sex-determining hormones are produced in the early stages of fetal development. If the level of these hormones changes, the development of fetal phenotypes can also change so that the natural tendency of the brain for certain sexes may be incompatible with the genetic makeup of the fetus and its sexual organs.
John Money in 1955 said that gender identity was something that could be formed with the influence of whether a child at an early age was raised as a boy or a girl.
