By reading the chaucer’s “The Monk’s Tale”, Holofernes was lucky, but his luck didn't last. Fortune word describes luck which indicates that there was lucky chance.

However, he lost his head before he was aware means that he was lucky but his luck did not last. He had lost his luck.
