Respuesta :

An ice-sheet refers to a huge mass of glacier mass that envelopes the majority of the land in the Polar regions. The ice-sheets envelope thousands of kilometers of the land surface of Earth. While valley glaciers refer to the streams of flowing ice in the mountain valleys. These glaciers enhance the depth and increase the sides of the mountain valleys with the help of abrasion.

Ice-sheets are found at the two Polar parts of the Earth, approximately 80 percent of Greenland in the Northern Hemisphere and about 98 percent of Antarctica in the Southern Hemisphere are enveloped by ice-sheets. These two regions of ice-sheets comprise 99 percent freshwater.

The glaciers are constrained by the surrounding topography, while the ice-sheets covers bigger regions of the Earth.

Valley glaciers flow in the valleys from high altitude to low altitude, while ice sheets flow in a bigger area that is confined and are often denoted to as continental glaciers.

Further Explanations:

Valley glaciers are tributaries of flowing ice curbed within steep enclosed valleys, following the progression of an ancient river valley. These glaciers originate in high mountains in almost every continent and travels transversely and down a slope, carving the vale through scouring. When the ice melts in the valley, remnants often get littered with small boulders elevated with the ice. The “Gorner Glacier” of Switzerland and the “Furtwangler Glacier” in Tanzania are examples of typical valley glaciers.

The ice sheets or continental glaciers are masses of glacial ice casing the surrounding terrain and can extend for more than 50,000 km².They are also formed like other glaciers are formed. Snow amasses for several years and then melts. The melted snow gets compressed and slowly changes its texture from fluffy precipitate to hard blocks and round ice pellets. They then move constantly and slowly down the hills towards the sea or other water masses.
