Glycolysis is a process that allows respiration and cellular metabolism, specifically through the breakdown of glucose, it is considered an ancient metabolic process for the following reasons:
- Glycolysis can occur in the absence of oxygen.
Primitive organisms originated in a world whose atmosphere lacked 02 and for this reason, glycolysis is considered the most primitive metabolic pathway and therefore is present in all current forms of life.
- It is the first part of energy metabolism and in eukaryotic cells it occurs in the cytoplasm.
Thanks to the ATP obtained from the breakdown of glucose, many forms of life get the energy to survive or to trigger much more complex chemical processes.
- The pyruvate generated in glycolysis can be used in different ways.
The pyruvate produced can be metabolized under anaerobic conditions to lactate (lactic fermentation) or ethanol (alcoholic fermentation) or be completely oxidized to CO2 under aerobic conditions.
Therefore, we can conclude that glycolysis is the oldest metabolic pathway and is in charge of providing an amount of energy necessary to fulfill different metabolic functions.
