Chinese and Irish workers had a few similarities between the two. For instance, neither group was greatly liked by Americans. They saw them as filthy immigrants who were taking jobs, because they would accept less pay. The Americans also dislike the fact that so many immigrants were taking up space. Both Chinese and Irish railroad workers suffered harsh living conditions and back breaking work on railroad crews.
The Irish men differed from the Chinese in the fact that they were easily considered drunkards. They drank heavily, causing many fights and strikes during the railroad's construction. The Chinese, on the other hand, remained sober. The Chinese practiced cleanliness and ate food such as fruits and vegetables, that helped them maintain their health. Many Irish ended up dying of dysentery because of their unhealthy habits. Another difference between the two is that the Irish were given a decent pay wage and did not have to buy their own tools. Railroad personnel denied the same benefits to the Chinese so they were paid much less and had to pay the railroad money for any of the equipment they used.
