THEY EMIT NORMAL light energy, but due to the motion of star which is moving away from us, and due to the expansion of universe , it appears us to RED SHIFTED that's Doppler effect it's true ..
The light that they emit is not changed. But by the time it reaches us its wavelength appears longer than it was when it left the object. Since red is the longest visible wavelength the change is called red shift.
