During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, European traders started to get involved in the Slave Trade.European traders had previously been interested in African nations and kingdoms, such as Ghana and Mali, due to their sophisticated trading networks. Traders then wanted to trade in human beings.

Early sugar plantations made extensive use of slaves because sugar was considered a cash crop that exhibited economies of scale in cultivation; it was most efficiently grown on large plantations with many workers. Men and women were forcibly taken from Africa and made into slaves to work on the plantations.
