In literature, conflict can exist internally or externally. Because the struggle to feed Rukmani’s family does not exist within Rukmani, it cannot be considered internal unless this struggle is causing Rukmani some sort of inner turmoil with which Rukmani must contend. However, because the struggle to provide food for the family exists extrinsically, the situation that exists is most evidently external conflict.
