Sun dried bricks used in building homes in the southwest are known as adobe. Native Americans in the region had made and used adobes to build their homes for centuries before the arrival of Spanish explorers. (See image: Courtesy of Fine Art America)

Adobe bricks-- bricks sun-dried made from clay. 

The practice of creating adobe as a building material dates back to Pre-Colombian societies in the Americas. The method was used in what is now the southwest of the US and further south into what is now Peru.
