Does social media represent individuals authentically?
Explain with examples.

Social Media does not present people authentically. Usually people only post the best and the worst of themselves, not the normal way they act day to day. People usually only post the best pictures of themselves, complete with filters and edits to make them more attractive or appealing. They post when they do exciting things like getting a new job, getting into a college, getting married, or having kids. They also tend to post when things are the worst, ranting about terrible things that happened to them. This keeps people from seeing what is actually happening day to day, their little highs or lows, small successes or minor failures. They also tend to make themselves look as good as they can, not just in photos but in situations. For instance, if they've done something wrong they will probably not post about it or spin it to make it look like they were in the right. Because it's entirely up to each person what they post, others only see what they want them to. 

Social media have a huge impact on representing an individual. However, it does not help in representing individuals authentically.

Some of the reasons that support the statement that social media does not play a role in representing individuals authentically are listed as follows:

  • Social media creates a sense of an artificial world where individuals only post regarding their exotic vacations, photogenic and healthy meals, thriving friendships, and so on.  
  • People mostly do not share their failures with social media posts and they tend to project only their good side.
  • Further, it plays a huge role in creating tension among social media users about presenting themselves in an authentic manner or in an idealized manner

For instance, social media users often do not post original images captured rather they use different filters to make the image more beautiful. Also, social media users tend to post only successful events such as things like getting married or getting a job and not about losing a job or getting a divorce.

Thus, all these instances and reasons conclude that social media does not help in representing individuals authentically.
