The Bible teaches in Romans 13:1-7 that Christians should not rebel against governmental leaders because they are "established by God" (Romans 13:2). 

According to Paul, the writer of Romans, authorities are servants of God and have the responsibility of punishing wrongdoers. The sole responsibility of the believers is "to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience." (Romans 13:5)

The Bible encourages Christians to respect the higher authorities even when their policies might not go so well with us. In that account of Romans 13: 1-7, we learn that the superior authorities stand in their respective positions by the permission of God. We are also urged in verse 7 to pay our taxes and dues to those to whom it belongs. So, God encourages Christians to obey and honor the higher authorities.

  • In his inspired letter to the Romans, Paul encouraged Christians to honor the governmental authorities. This is so despite the fact that some of these authorities might have policies that are not right or favorable to us.

  • In verse 2 of that account, we are told that whoever opposes the authorities has taken a stand against God.  

  • Verse 4 describes the authorities as God's ministers who avenge his wrath against those who do bad.

  • Therefore, we must always be subjective to the governmental authorities.
