Gametes can be defined as male or female germ cells that unite with gamete of opposite sex to form a zygote. Gametes are formed by meiosis and thus, each gamete is haploid, consists half the number of chromosomes as present in a normal cell.  

When male and female gametes (sperm and egg, respectively), it leads to formation of zygote. As each gamete is haploid in nature, resulting zygote has two sets of chromosomes (one from each gamete), which means zygote is diploid in nature.
