Jim Crow laws were regional and municipal ordinances that enforced racial segregation in the American South. Although formal and unofficial segregation practises also affected other parts of the country, many states outside the South had laws in place prohibiting discrimination in public facilities and elections by the late 19th century.Jim Crow laws and Black codes were both implemented at various times in the southern United States to enforce racial segregation and limit the voting power of Black people.
Some states implemented black codes that severely restricted the rights of Black people, many of whom had been enslaved, after the Civil War ended in 1865. These laws restricted the kind of jobs that African Americans may have and their right to quit a job after being hired.
African Americans experienced prejudice on a social, economic, and legal level. Theaters, hotels, restaurants and hospitals kept them apart in subpar settings or wouldn't let them in at all. Shops served them last. The first edition of the travel guide The Negro Motorist Green Book was released in 1937. It featured places where visitors who identified as African-American might expect to get unbiased service. African-American students in public schools that were segregated frequently got an education that was inferior than that of white children, with outdated or worn-out textbooks, underpaid instructors, and poorer facilities and resources.
