Step 1: Study these excerpts from speeches given by Lincoln and Douglas:
A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half-slave and half-free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved—I do not expect the house to fall—but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other.

—Abraham Lincoln, Springfield, Illinois, June 16, 1858
You can also view the entire speech, from the National Park Service.

I believe that the Union can only be preserved by maintaining inviolate the Constitution of the United States as our fathers have made it. That Constitution guarantees to the people of every State the right to have slavery or not have it…each State being left free to decide for itself. The framers of that Constitution…well understood that each one of the thirteen States had distinct and separate interests, and required distinct and separate local laws and local institutions.

—Stephen A. Douglas, Springfield, Illinois, June 17, 1858

Respuesta :

Lincoln's speech:
a) Lincoln believes that America cannot continue as a nation that has slavery in some states and no slavery in other states. This is evident from the quote " I believe this government cannot endure as half-slave and half-free." Lincoln says this based on the events of the last 30 years. The US Congress was constantly trying find ways to deal with the issue of slavery (such as the Missouri Compromise and Compromise of 1850). Ultimately, he realized that these laws were just temporary solutions to a long term problem.

b) Douglas, on the other hand, argues that it should be left up to each state individually to decide on whether or not they have slavery. This is evident from the following quote: " ...each State being left free to decide for itself." Douglas implies that the founding fathers made the constitution in order to allow for different laws in different states, as each states needs are different. Douglas would probably argue that the southern states need this institution, as it allows for the generation of huge profits for plantation owners.
