C. House Un-American Activities Committee--this committee was created for the full purpose of investigating possible spies or threats to American security. 

This group targeted Hollywood actors/actresses for their liberal slant in the media. Intellectuals were also targeted as a source of communist ideology. Eventually small accusations turned into "witch-hunt" practices by the federal government.
