Mrs. Pontellier jumped out of bed to go the next room, came back and decided to lay back on the pillow. She did not want to answer any questions from her husband who was smoking. When his cigar went out, he feel asleep. Mrs. Pontellier probably wanted to get some fresh air from all the smoke she was breathing in, which is why she left the room. She was probably frustrated or simply didn't want to inhale more smoke, so she decided to not speak.
