In 1978, President Jimmy Carter created the President's Commission on the Holocaust and appointed Elie Wiesel as Chairman of the Commission. The Commission had 34 members which included Holocaust survivors, lay and religious leaders, historians and members of Congress. The Commission's task was to submit a report for the creation and maintenance of a memorial for those who lost their lives in the Holocaust.
