Botulism is caused by a bacterial infection specifically Clostridium botulinum, an anaerobic, gram-positive spore forming rod, whose spores survive in soil and water.  This toxin acts by blocking nerve function by inhibiting release of acetylcholine neurotransmitter that results to muscular rigidity and spasms of respiratory, laryngeal, and abdominal muscles, which may cause respiratory failure.
