When an eight-hour-old newborn is given a concentrated shrimp odor to smell, the newborn will respond with a facial expression that displays disgusts or rejection. Newborns can smell and can discriminate between different olfactory stimuli. They react with different facial expressions and body movements to sweet, sour and bitter stimuli.  Newborns responds to vanilla extracts with sucking and facial expression that are similar to smiles but when  given an offensive odor to smell, they  respond with a facial expression that displays rejection.
