When they are lytic the infected cells will die, which causes symptoms. If they are Latent (or temperate) then they usually only produce certain repressor proteins that are hard to test for. And the infection shows no outward symptoms
In lytic cycle the infected cell get destroyed which cause symptoms.

It is the reproductive cycle of virus in which the infected cells destroy. Destroyed cells produce chemicals that cause further chain of reactions.
These cause symptoms like shivering, fever etc.
