This excerpt from "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka, however, is an implication of the awareness of the authority yet the word choices of the narrator show the distressful condition that Gregor and his family were going through, due to the fear of losing his job and badgering of his parents by his boss. The uncertainty that Gregor faces for his job has left him and his family in a state of grief, pain, and distress. The usage of words by the author clearly reflects the afflicted state of Gregor and family due to the lack of economic freedom in their lives and over-dependency over the authority. They are in a dreadful state as there is a constant fear of getting back to their old days and Gregor's helplessness to abandon his parents due to the lack of sufficient economic resources.
