While I'm not sure why she was sentenced to jail, from what I've read, they weren't given any proper treatment as political prisoners. The jails had poor sanitation, infested food, and probably so much more. Because of this, she decided to go on a hunger strike.  Due to the hunger strike, she was brought to the prison's psych ward and was fed raw eggs through a feeding tube by force. I'm assuming this made protesters realize what was happening and it was somehow tied into the 19th amendment; the right for women to vote.  Apparently sometime after, she also played a big role in protecting women during the Civil rights act in 1964.
