I haven't read the Black Cat but just by reading all the choices, I can assume that D is the right answer because none of the other choices would create suspense. A creates a joyful tone and that wouldn't create suspense. B just mentions that he gave away his motives which would have to happen after the suspense of killing the cat. C just says that he killed the cat and that doesn't create suspense, it just restates what we already knew happened. D mentions the build up to the cat's death and that would create suspense, which means that D would be the answer.
