Horizon Line: The actual horizon is where the earth meets the sky or the sky meets the ocean.

Parallel Lines: lines that are always the same distance from each other. They never meet.

Picture Plane: The picture plane is the actual surface of a drawing or painting.

Perpendicular: Vertical and horizontal lines at a 90-degree angle.

Vertical: A-line that is perpendicular to the horizon line. A vertical line is "standing up".

Horizontal: A line is parallel to the horizon line. A horizontal line is "lying down".

Eye Level: A level that coincides with the viewer’s eyes

Vanishing Point: A point at which parallel lines receding into space appear to meet.

Foreshortening: The appearance of objects becoming smaller as they go back in space when and larger when up close. A circle becomes an ellipse, a square becomes a trapezoid.

This painting reflects Renaissance themes, especially the Renaissance interest in classical ideas. The painting includes elements of classical architecture, such as the Greek and Roman arches, columns, and statues. Classical philosophers, such as Aristotle, appear in the painting however, they have faces of contemporary Renaissance figures. In addition, the painting reflects the ideas of humanism, as it focuses on individualism and human achievement.
