So if we don't unnecessarily confuse ourselves by taking bases, a 2x2 matrix will always have rank 2 unless one row or column is a scalar multiple of the other*, in which case it will have rank 1. (and also it'll have rank 1 if you have a row or column of zeroes, and rank 0 if it's the zero matrix).
