Barbara Frietchie flew a Union flag whilst Confederate soldiers marched through
The story of Barbara Fritchie talks about how Confederate soldiers were marching through Union territory and as the approached a certain town, all the men in the town removed the Union flags that were being flown for fear of reprisal.
Barbara Fritchie would have none of that and she:
- Went out and flew the Union flag and,
- Admonished General "Stonewall" Jackson for trying to get her to remove it by telling him that it was the flag of the United States and he must respect it.
General Jackson obliged her request and ordered that no soldier take the flag down.
Whilst there is serious speculation about whether this actually happened, we can conclusively state that for the purpose of the poem, Barbara Fritchie was in conflict with Confederate soldiers because she flew the Union flag whilst they marched by.
